Northern Cyprus has been a popular tourist destination for many years. With an idyllic Mediterranean climate, meaning hot summers and cold winters, it is emerging as a favourite among those looking to invest in a second home for holiday purposes or to relocate more permanently. One place of particular interest is Lefke which is situated in the northwest of Cyprus at the foothills of the Troodos mountain range in the centre of two valleys.
A stunning area that benefits from a beautiful coastline and vast mountains, it is lush with citrus groves. It is the only place in Cyprus where the Yama oranges are grown and is also popular for growing soft fruit. Agriculture is so successful in this area because of the three dams located here, which provide constant water all year round. "The Hidden Paradise" is a widely used and most apt description of the area, given its clean air, plentiful water sources, and lush green land. Restaurants situated along the coastline are an ideal place to enjoy fresh fish and delicious Turkish cuisine, and many have beach facilities for use by patrons.
The Troodos mountains overlook the town centre and are so close that in the winter, the snow-capped summits are visible. Within the town, the central attraction is Ataturk Park. This is used to host various events, including cookery competitions, and in August, there is an annual fair to celebrate the freedom of Lefke during the war. Every Autumn, the town also hosts an annual music festival which is doubtless well attended by the students of the European University of Lefke. This is one of Northern Cyprus' most important universities and is located here. The Ottomans dominated Lefke for over 300 years, and to this day, there still remain examples of architecture from this era. There are also several sites of historical interest in the area from the Roman, Byzantine, Middle Ages, Venetian and British periods. It was once a prosperous mining town, and its mountains were rich with copper and gold. The name Cyprus originates from the ancient word for copper, and so although Lefke is not the capital, it is fair to say at one time, it was the island's heart.
Benefits of Buying a Property in Lefke
